Reliability in power systems or electric grids can be generally defined as the availability time (capable of fully supplying the demand) of the system compared to the amount of time it is unavailable (incapable of supplying the demand). For systems with high uncertainties, such as renewable energy based power systems, achieving a high level of reliability is a formidable challenge due to the increased penetrations of the intermittent renewable sources such as wind and solar. A careful and accurate planning is at the utmost importance to achieve high reliability in renewable energy based systems. This chapter will assess wind-based power system's reliability issues, and provide a case study that proposes a solution to enhance the reliability of the system.
