Description : When George Shoobridge Carr (1837-1914) wrote his Synopsis of Elementary Results he intended it as an aid to students preparing for degree-level examinations such as the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos, for which he provided private tuition. He would have been startled to see the two volumes, first published in 1880 and 1886 respectively, reissued more than a century later. Notably, in 1903 the work fell into the hands of the Indian prodigy Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920) and greatly influenced his mathematical education. It is the interaction between a methodical teaching aid and the soaring spirit of a self-taught genius which gives this reissue its interest. Volume 1, presented here in its 1886 printing, contains sections on mathematical tables, algebra, the theory of equations, plane trigonometry, spherical trigonometry, elementary geometry and geometrical conics.

Description : Completely self-contained, this survey explores the important topics in pure and applied mathematics. Each chapter can be read independently of the others, and all subjects are unified by cross-references to the complete work. Numerous worked-out examples appear throughout the text, and review questions and references conclude each section. 1957 edition.

Description : Normally, mathematical research has been divided into 'pure' and 'applied', and only within the past decade has this distinction become blurred. However, differential geometry is one area of mathematics that has not made this distinction and has consistently played a vital role in both general areas. The papers in this volume represent the proceedings of a conference entitled 'Differential Geometry: The Interface Between Pure and Applied Mathematics', which was held in San Antonio, Texas, in April 1986. The purpose of the conference was to explore recent exciting applications and challenging classical problems in differential geometry. The papers represent a tremendous range of applications and techniques in such diverse areas as ordinary differential equations, Lie groups, algebra, numerical analysis and control theory.

Description : This volume contains the proceedings from three conferences: the PISRS 2011 International Conference on Analysis, Fractal Geometry, Dynamical Systems and Economics, held November 8-12, 2011 in Messina, Italy; the AMS Special Session on Fractal Geometry in Pure and Applied Mathematics, in memory of Benoît Mandelbrot, held January 4-7, 2012, in Boston, MA; and the AMS Special Session on Geometry and Analysis on Fractal Spaces, held March 3-4, 2012, in Honolulu, HI. Articles in this volume cover fractal geometry and various aspects of dynamical systems in applied mathematics and the applications to other sciences. Also included are articles discussing a variety of connections between these subjects and various areas of physics, engineering, computer science, technology, economics and finance, as well as of mathematics (including probability theory in relation with statistical physics and heat kernel estimates, geometric measure theory, partial differential equations in relation with condensed matter physics, global analysis on non-smooth spaces, the theory of billiards, harmonic analysis and spectral geometry). The companion volume (Contemporary Mathematics, Volume 600) focuses on the more mathematical aspects of fractal geometry and dynamical systems.
