It is intended to promote the welfare of both patient and health care provider. The new chapter on moral distress discusses futile care among other causes of moral distress and offers coping techniques for situations in which a nurse has an ethical issue with a standard of care but is powerless to change that care. The other new chapter, Nursing Practice Intersections: Legal Decision Making Within a Symphonological Ethical Perspective, focuses on situations that can be interpreted as either moral and illegal, or immoral and legal. The fifth edition also features a new section on ethical colleagueship, providing support to relieve common dilemmas among health care professionals. Description : This book presents a realist, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary theory of immediate awareness showing it is the most primitive cognitive network underlying all our natural intelligence. Including preattentive and attention processes, as well as primitive relations of the senses, imagination and memory, immediate awareness is a kind of knowing deeply embedded and interwoven throughout our multiple kinds of natural intelligence. It permits as well as drives our knowing how, our bodily intelligence. Against the Cartesian mind-body split found in earlier and current theories, the author shows how immediate awareness permits emergent properties of mind in multilayered primitive relations of touching and moving in bodily kinesthetic intelligence. Contrary to existing theories, she argues that sensation is not cognitively "neutral", nor does it require a "representation" in order to be accessible to cognitive processes. Dr. Estep presents empirical evidence and arguments that sensation of immediate awareness is itself cognitive and embedded within our sensory and somatosensory-motor processes. The author's aim is to turn to a more geometric approach to natural intelligence, as opposed to the prevalent symbol-based view. In this approach, she uses random Boolean networks as a way of obtaining law-like properties of those primitive relations of immediate awareness in terms of dynamical systems theory. This demonstrates the properties of self-organization and adaptation of immediate awareness without committing one to a physicalist/materialist theory. It gives us a way of understanding core properties of our own inner conscious lives, and of understanding the smooth and seamless sensitivity of primitive sensory and somatosensory-motor awareness. Dr. Estep's theory of immediate awareness also shows that the computational view of mind is wrong. Though our minds do classify, classification is not all they do. Our immediate awareness indexically selects sui generis objects that are unique and of no kind or class. The influence of nominalism and narrow naturalist theories have resulted in extremely narrow concepts of the human knowing mind and intelligence, leaving out immediate awareness altogether. We slip into subtle nominalist fallacies when we take our language metaphors – and language itself – too far.
Description : Is there a theory that explains the essence of consciousness? Or is consciousness itself an illusion? Am I conscious now? Now considered the 'last great mystery of science', consciousness was once viewed with extreme scepticism and rejected by mainstream scientists. It is now a significant area of research, albeit a contentious one, as well as a rapidly expanding area of study for students of psychology, philosophy, and neuroscience. This edition of Consciousness, revised by author team Susan Blackmore and Emily Troscianko, explores the key theories and evidence in consciousness studies ranging from neuroscience and psychology to quantum theories and philosophy. It examines why the term ‘consciousness’ has no recognised definition and provides an opportunity to delve into personal intuitions about the self, mind, and consciousness. Featuring comprehensive coverage of all core topics in the field, this edition includes: Why the problem of consciousness is so hard Neuroscience and the neural correlates of consciousness Why we might be mistaken about our own minds The apparent difference between conscious and unconscious Theories of attention, free will, and self and other The evolution of consciousness in animals and machines Altered states from meditation to drugs and dreaming Complete with key concept boxes, profiles of well-known thinkers, and questions and activities suitable for both independent study and group work, Consciousness provides a complete introduction to this fascinating field. Description : So often in many people's lives, there is an awakening. For some it comes out of nowhere, and for others it seems as though it has always been. Seemingly from darkness, a light turns on, and all that was once confusing becomes clear, and all that was once hidden is revealed. Some call this enlightenment. Some call this a revelation. Some call this peace. I call it an awareness of the heart. The following passages were written between late 2002 until 2010. Inspired by those around me, including loved ones, family, friends and strangers, and by the happenings of the world we share, my heart was poured onto paper. Though these words were written by my hand and sometimes spoken by my tongue, there is nothing unique about them, for the stirring in me is also in you. So whether you choose to read the following passages in order, read it backwards, or randomly allow yourself to pick a page, don't follow me. Instead, take a journey into your own heart and see where it takes you. Throughout these pages, you will find references to God, Allah, Great Spirit, The Divine, Elohim, Yahweh, Jehovah, He who has no name, and a myriad of other beliefs. Though our words and our thoughts may differ, today, allow yourself to read with an open mind, an open heart and an open spirit. Let your heart inspire you. Let God work through you by being you.

Description : In The Pursuit of Clarity, author Jeremy Albertsen seeks to reveal the different levels of awareness and illuminates the different ways people view the world. He explores how these factors affect the way people interact with each other and our environment. In order to gain clarity, Albertsen made the choice to pursue a new way of life—to walk away from the things and events that were affecting his life and find a new path. He gave up the distractions, intoxicants, and numbing habits that Western culture uses addictively and sought to find a simpler, more enriching life. As part of this journey, he began writing a journal that he called The Pursuit of Clarity, and with every step, he chronicled the wisdom he gained. Following his own inner guidance, over the next years he found his balance and came to love life lived in concert with nature. He felt at peace in his body and began to feel good not about what he’d cut out of his life, but what he had put into his life. As we achieve higher levels of awareness we become empowered to raise our consciousness and activate dormant potentials to evolution. We can achieve perfect health, longevity and the magic of our quantum potential with the understanding of who we are and why we are here. Whether you want to participate or just be, The Pursuit of Clarity places you on the crest of the wave of human evolution as it reveals wisdom gathered on this journey.
