Description : As population growth accelerates, researchers and professionals face challenges as they attempt to plan for the future. Urban planning is a significant component in addressing the key concerns as the world population moves towards the city and leaves the rural environment behind, yet there are many factors to consider for a well rounded community. The Handbook of Research on Social, Economic, and Environmental Sustainability in the Development of Smart Cities brings together the necessary research and interdisciplinary discussion to address dilemmas created by population growth and the expansion of urban environments. This publication is an essential reference source for researchers, academicians, investors, and practitioners interested in the urban planning and technological advancements necessary for the creation of smart cities.
Description : Despite the growing importance of the global emerging market (GEM) for the world’s business, economies, and politics, it has received a relatively scant amount of academic attention in business and economics courses. This textbook is the first to focus on the GEM and its strategic and economic characteristics. The Global Emerging Market: Strategic Management and Economics describes the fundamental economic base and trends of the global marketplace (GMP) as well as business and management development for the conditions of emerging-market countries (EMCs). Focusing on the formation of a strategic mindset and the decision making process, it explains how to analyze the basic economic factors and the global order, especially in times of crisis. This text also explains how to classify countries related to this new market of tremendous opportunities. Furthermore, the book includes recommendations on how to develop entry and exit strategies for the GEM, work in it and create efficient management systems. Features include: Extensive tables, charts, and graphs illustrating the strategic considerations of the GMP and the GEM End-of-chapter study questions Practical examples based on the author’s involvement in the development of the GEM, from both sides of the international transactions This academic book is the ideal guide for current business leaders and students on how to make strategic, symmetric, and asymmetric time-sensitive decisions related to the GEM.
Description : As populations have continued to grow and expand, many people have made their homes in cities around the globe. Description : Insider knowledge about a complex technical system, coupled with access to its elements, has the potential to be used for triggering the most disastrous of terrorist attacks. Technological terrorism is the unauthorized impact on a complex technical system with the intention of breaking down its protection and initiating secondary catastrophic processes to cause damage and loss outside the facility. Intelligent terrorism, on the other hand, is the unauthorized purposeful interference in the processes of design, construction or maintenance of a complex technical system, and is either aimed at increasing existing vulnerabilities or creating new ones. This book is based on the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on ‘Comparative Analysis of Technological and Intelligence Terrorism Impacts on Complex Technical Systems’. It lays the foundation for a risk-informed approach to modeling, analyzing, managing and controlling complex technical systems in the face of terrorist attacks. To formulate such an approach, it is necessary to combine the insights of a spectrum of disciplines across engineering, human and social sciences, and economics. The book explains how an understanding of the vulnerabilities of complex technical systems to terrorist attack can reduce these vulnerabilities and contain or limit the impact of terrorism, and also the way in which such an understanding is crucial to the development of a set of design criteria and codes which will take such vulnerabilities into account. The book also identifies areas of further research and opportunities for future exchange and collaboration.
Description : New ventures have played a significant role in the world's economic and social development. In particular, the development of high technology ventures has been viewed as both a revitalization tool for developed market economies, such as the USA, and a driving force for economic transformation in transition economies, such as China. With a focus on new technology ventures in China's emerging market, this volume brings together researchers from a variety of disciplines and countries to provide a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon.New technology ventures are highly vulnerable to environmental selection because they lack adequate knowledge of their environments, new product experience, and managerial and financial resources. Thus, these ventures tend to have high failure rates. Not surprisingly, a major stream of research in strategic management and entrepreneurship literature has focused on identifying the strategies that new technology ventures use to offset their liability of newness in order to improve their performance. However, previous studies have been done in the context of developed markets. This volume explores how new ventures successfully grow in China's transition economy where strategic factor markets and institutional frameworks have not been developed in this context. Significant issues addressed in this volume include:* Factors contributing to the growth of technology entrepreneurship in China* Ownership and survival of technology ventures in China* Challenges faced by venture capitalists in China* Growth strategies and environment-strategy interaction in Chinese technology ventures * Organizational control and reward and technology innovation in Chinese technology ventures* Political risks of foreign ventures in China's emerging market* R&D globalization and internationalization strategy of Chinese technology ventures. The contributors' conclusions will be highly valuable to managers of new technology ventures and to Western firms attempting to enter the high technology industries in China. Researchers interested in new technology ventures and innovation will also find this volume a useful addition to their libraries.
