Description : This publication reflects on the discussion on using chaos theory for the study of society. It explores the interface between chaos theory and the social sciences. A broad variety of fields (including Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Management, Philosophy and Cognitive Sciences) is represented in the book. The leading themes are: Conceptual and Methodological Issues, Social Connectionism and the Connectionist Mind, Social Institutions and Public Policy, and Social Simulations. The book includes the following topics: the relevance of the complexity-chaos paradigm for analyzing social systems, the usefulness of nonlinear dynamics for studying the formation and sustainability of social groups, the comparison between spontaneous social orders and spontaneous biological/natural orders, the building of Artificial Societies, and the contribution of the chaos paradigm to a better understanding and formulation of public policies.

Description : In addition to explaining and modeling unexplored phenomena in nature and society, chaos uses vital parts of nonlinear dynamical systems theory and established chaotic theory to open new frontiers and fields of study. Handbook of Applications of Chaos Theory covers the main parts of chaos theory along with various applications to diverse areas. Expert contributors from around the world show how chaos theory is used to model unexplored cases and stimulate new applications. Accessible to scientists, engineers, and practitioners in a variety of fields, the book discusses the intermittency route to chaos, evolutionary dynamics and deterministic chaos, and the transition to phase synchronization chaos. It presents important contributions on strange attractors, self-exciting and hidden attractors, stability theory, Lyapunov exponents, and chaotic analysis. It explores the state of the art of chaos in plasma physics, plasma harmonics, and overtone coupling. It also describes flows and turbulence, chaotic interference versus decoherence, and an application of microwave networks to the simulation of quantum graphs. The book proceeds to give a detailed presentation of the chaotic, rogue, and noisy optical dissipative solitons; parhelic-like circle and chaotic light scattering; and interesting forms of the hyperbolic prism, the Poincaré disc, and foams. It also covers numerous application areas, from the analysis of blood pressure data and clinical digital pathology to chaotic pattern recognition to economics to musical arts and research.

Description : It is now generally recognised that very simple dynamical systems can produce apparently random behaviour. In the last couple of years, attention has turned to focus on the flip side of this coin: random-looking time series (or random-looking patterns in space) may indeed be the result of very complicated processes or “real noise”, but they may equally well be produced by some very simple mechanism (a low-dimensional attractor). In either case, a long-term prediction will be possible only in probabilistic terms. However, in the very short term, random systems will still be unpredictable but low-dimensional chaotic ones may be predictable (appearances to the contrary). The Royal Society held a two-day discussion meeting on topics covering diverse fields, including biology, economics, geophysics, meteorology, statistics, epidemiology, earthquake science and many others. Each topic was covered by a leading expert in the field. The meeting dealt with different basic approaches to the problem of chaos and forecasting, and covered applications to nonlinear forecasting of both artificially-generated time series and real data from context in the above-mentioned diverse fields. This book marks a rather special and rare occasion on which prominent scientists from different areas converge on the same theme. It forms an informative introduction to the science of chaos, with special reference to real data. Contents:Orthogonal Projection, Embedding Dimension and Sample Size in Chaotic Time Series from a Statistical Perspective (B Cheng & H Tong)A Theory of Correlation Dimension for Stationary Time Series (C D Cutler)On Prediction and Chaos in Stochastic Systems (Q W Yao & H Tong)Locally Optimized Prediction of Nonlinear Systems: Stochastic and Deterministic (L A Smith)A Poisson Distribution for the BDS Test Statistic for Independence in a Time Series (R C L Wolff)Chaos and Nonlinear Forecastability in Economics and Finance (B LeBaron)Paradigm Change in Prediction (A S Weigend)and other papers Readership: Mathematicians, economists, statisticians and nonlinear scientists. keywords: “… useful and recommended for forecast researchers striving for a more realistic methodology that goes substantially beyond conventional statistical theory.” M A Kaboudan

Description : A celebration of a unique culture and its experience of design, this sensitive text is a timely examination of Japanese design at the start of a new century. The country's economic boom in the 1980s produced a surge of interest in land and building, and consequently in design in all its forms. From restaurant interiors to products, from private housing to recreational spaces, design received an unprecedented degree of attention. However the bursting in the early 1990s of this so-called 'bubble' economy has prompted a re-examination of design and its role in urban society.

Description : What is the real meaning of 'an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth'? Where did the idea for the 'Jubilee 2000' and 'Drop the Debt' campaigns come from? Here, Burnside looks at aspects of law and legality in the Bible, from the patriarchal narratives in the Hebrew Bible through to the trials of Jesus in the New Testament.

Description : A study of Natsume Soseki (1867-1916), one of modern Japan's most revered writers. The book presents a critical examination of a split that runs deep in the discursive space of Soseki's writings as order grapples with the forces of chaos. Displaying an appreciation for the key attributes and complex cultural significance of Soseki's work, the author argues that Soseki's writing betrays a dark, romantic voice that speaks of something cavernous and amorphous.

Description : This wide-ranging and accessible book serves as a fascinating guide to the strategies and concepts that help us understand the boundaries between physics, on the one hand, and sociology, economics, and biology on the other. From cooperation and criticality to flock dynamics and fractals, the author addresses many of the topics belonging to the broad theme of complexity. He chooses excellent examples (requiring no prior mathematical knowledge) to illuminate these ideas and their implications. The lively style and clear description of the relevant models will appeal both to novices and those with an existing knowledge of the field.
