Description : The selections contained in these volumes from the papers and letters of Leibniz are intended to serve the student in two ways: first, by providing a more adequate and balanced conception of the full range and penetration of Leibniz's creative intellectual powers; second, by inviting a fresher approach to his intellectual growth and a clearer perception of the internal strains in his thinking, through a chronological arrangement. Much confusion has arisen in the past through a neglect of the develop ment of Leibniz's ideas, and Couturat's impressive plea, in his edition of the Opuscu/es et fragments (p. xii), for such an arrangement is valid even for incomplete editions. The beginning student will do well, however, to read the maturer writings of Parts II, III, and IV first, leaving Part I, from a period too largely neglected by Leibniz criticism, for a later study of the still obscure sources and motives of his thought. The Introduction aims primarily to provide cultural orientation and an exposition of the structure and the underlying assumptions of the philosophical system rather than a critical evaluation. I hope that together with the notes and the Index, it will provide those aids to the understanding which the originality of Leibniz's scientific, ethical, and metaphysical efforts deserve.

Description : This free PDF textbook is intended as an upper level undergraduate or introductory graduate textbook in statistical thinking. It is best suited to students with a good knowledge of calculus and the ability to think abstractly. The focus of the text is the ideas that statisticians care about as opposed to technical details of how to put those ideas into practice. Another unusual aspect is the use of statistical software as a pedagogical tool. That is, instead of viewing the computer merely as a convenient and accurate calculating device, the book uses computer calculation and simulation as another way of explaining and helping readers understand the underlying concepts. The book is written with the statistical language R embedded throughout. R software and accompanying manuals are available for free download from http: //www.r-project.or

Description : Life gets strange when Alice sees a white rabbit wearing a coat and gloves. Then she follows him down a hole. Suddenly she grows smaller, larger, smaller, larger, smaller--and almost drown in her own tears. She meets a dodo, a lizard, a smoking caterpillar, a duchess... a cat without a grin. Then a grin--without a cat. She has a mad tea party with a hatter and a hare. And a madder croquet game with a King--where playing card soldiers are the hoops, flamingoes are the mallets, hedgehogs are the balls and the Queen of Hearts cries "OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!" Which lands Alice, the mock turtle, and a gryphon (a what?) at a trial without rules where death is the penalty! In Wonderland, anything can happen And probably, anything will.... Description : When Richard Nisbett showed an animated underwater scene to his American students, they zeroed in on a big fish swimming among smaller fish. Japanese subjects, on the other hand, made observations about the background environment...and the different "seeings" are a clue to profound underlying cognitive differences between Westerners and East Asians. As Professor Nisbett shows in The Geography of Thought people actually think - and even see - the world differently, because of differing ecologies, social structures, philosophies, and educational systems that date back to ancient Greece and China, and that have survived into the modern world. As a result, East Asian thought is "holistic" - drawn to the perceptual field as a whole, and to relations among objects and events within that field. By comparison to Western modes of reasoning, East Asian thought relies far less on categories, or on formal logic; it is fundamentally dialectic, seeking a "middle way" between opposing thoughts. By contrast, Westerners focus on salient objects or people, use attributes to assign them to categories, and apply rules of formal logic to understand their behaviour.

Description : This textbook is designed to equip students with a basic 'conceptual toolkit' for the study of political thought: (i) a basic political vocabulary, (ii) a conceptual vocabulary and (iii) an historical vocabulary. By mastering these vocabularies, students will be able to engage more deeply and confidently with political thought and the moral and political worlds in which they live.Organised chronologically to trace the history of political thought, the book follows a unique dual structure which introduces both key thinkers and core concepts. Each chapter is written bearing in mind this two-tier organisation and explicitly draws out important elements of both the historical and conceptual vocabularies. On completion, the student will be equipped with an historical and conceptual map to orient them in further study, as well as a clear grasp of the basic vocabulary in which such study is undertaken.Key Features:* Designed as a course text: structured to fit the demands of modularised teaching* Equips the student with basic political, historical and conceptual vocabularies from which they can build a critical glossary of terms* Adopts an engaging and innovative approach to the study of Political Theory* Key thinkers are taken as the starting point for the exploration of important conceptual questions* Political thinkers covered include: Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, Bentham, Burke, Rawls, Parekh and Rorty* Topics covered include: human nature, political legitimacy, utilitarianism and rights, distributive justice, relativism, multiculturalism, international relations, conservatism, feminism and postmodernism

Description : Beginning with the problem of evil in the west professor A.L. Herman traces the history of one of the most fascinating of all perennial philosophical puzzles. The author identifies some twenty one historical solutions to the problem which are then reduced to eight quite distinct solutions. Prof. Herman then turns in the second part of the book to the history of the problem of evil in Indian thought. The author then joins the analysis of the problem of evil (taken from the first part of the book) to the Indian doctrine of rebirth in order to attempt a solution to the problem. By careful analysis the author shows that the doctrine of rebirth can satisfy the conditions already set forth as adequate for a solution to the problem of evil.1

Description : Queer and Subjugated Knowledges: generating subversive Imaginaries makes an invaluable contribution to gender and sexuality studies, engaging with queer theory to reconceptualize everyday interactions. the scholars in this book respond to J. Halberstam's call to engage in alternative imaginings to reconceptualize forms of being, the production of knowledge, and envisage a world with different sites for justice and injustice. the recent work of cultural theorist, Judith Halberstam, makes new investments in the notion of the counter-hegemonic, the subversive and the alternative. for Halberstam, the alternative resides in a creative engagement with subjugated histories, an ecstatic investment in the subcultural and a defiant refusal of a dominant model of theory. Working across Rhetoric and Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Performance Studies, Television and Media Studies, Animation, Sociology, History, Social Policy, Childhood Studies, Education, and Cultural Geography, this unique interdisciplinary text aimed at academics, undergraduate and postgraduate students provides challenging new frameworks for generating knowledge.
