Description : This edition of Grimm’s Fairy Tales is a fantastic collection classic stories including such well-known and loved stories as ‘The Frog Prince’, ‘Hansel and Gretel’, ‘The Valiant Little Tailor’, ‘Cinderella’, ‘Snow White’, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’ and ‘Briar Rose’. It was originally published in 1917 and is decorated with stunning black-and-white illustrations by Louis Rhead. These beautiful images further refine the enchanting storytelling – all presented together in this text. It is a book to be enjoyed by both young and old, a beautiful example of literary and artistic endeavour. The Brothers Grimm (or Die Brüder Grimm), Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors – who together specialised in collecting and publishing folklore during the nineteenth century. The popularity of their collected tales has endured well; they have been translated into more than 100 languages, and remain in print in the present day. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Description : This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1863 edition. Excerpt: ... THE KING OF THE GOLDEN MOUNTAIN. CERTAIN merchant had two children, a boy and a girl, who, at the time our tale begins, were both so little that they could not run alone. This merchant had just sent away two richly laden vessels in which he had embarked all his property, and, while he hoped to gain much money by their voyage, the news came that both ships had sunk to the bottom of the sea. Thus, instead of a rich merchant, he became quite a poor man, and he had nothing left but a field near the town where he dwelt, and therein, to divert his thoughts for a while from his loss, he went to walk. While he paced to and fro, there suddenly appeared a little Black Dwarf, who asked him the reason of his sorrowful looks, and what it was he fook so much to heart? "If you are able to help me," said the merchant, "I will tell you." "Who knows," replied the Dwarf, "whether I can or not?" So then the merchant told him what had happened, -- how all his wealth was sunk at the bottom of the sea, and nothing remained to him but this one field. "Do not grieve yourself any longer," said the Dwarf; "for, if you will promise to bring me here in twelve years whatever first rubs itself against your leg on your return home, you shall have all the money you can require." The merchant thought it would be his dog who would meet him first, for he remembered not, just then, his children, so he gave the little black man his word and honor to the bargain, and returned to his home. Just as he came within sight of his house his little boy saw him, and was so glad that he toddled up to him and clasped him by the knees. The father was frightened, for his promise occurred to him, and he knew now what he had sworn to; but still, as he found no money in his coffers, he...

Description : Grimms’ fairy tales are among the best-known stories in the world, but the way they have been introduced into and interpreted by cultures across the globe has varied enormously. In Grimms’ Tales around the Globe, editors Vanessa Joosen and Gillian Lathey bring together scholars from Asia, Europe, and North and Latin America to investigate the international reception of the Grimms’ tales. The essays in this volume offer insights into the social and literary role of the tales in a number of countries and languages, finding aspects that are internationally constant as well as locally particular. In the first section, Cultural Resistance and Assimilation, contributors consider the global history of the reception of the Grimms’ tales in a range of cultures. In these eight chapters, scholars explore how cunning translators and daring publishers around the world reshaped and rewrote the tales, incorporating them into existing fairy-tale traditions, inspiring new writings, and often introducing new uncertainties of meaning into the already ambiguous stories. Contributors in the second part, Reframings, Paratexts, and Multimedia Translations, shed light on how the Grimms’ tales were affected by intermedial adaptation when traveling abroad. These six chapters focus on illustrations, manga, and film and television adaptations. In all, contributors take a wide view of the tales’ history in a range of locales—including Poland, China, Croatia, India, Japan, and France. Grimms’ Tales around the Globe shows that the tales, with their paradox between the universal and the local and their long and world-spanning translation history, form a unique and exciting corpus for the study of reception. Fairy-tale and folklore scholars as well as readers interested in literary history and translation will appreciate this enlightening volume.
